GALLERY 5 - Yoga Mysteries
Hands to Feet Pose (Padahastasana)
Egg Tempera and Palladium Leaf on Gesso Panel - 10" x 8"
My yoga paintings have been criticized for their nudity. I actually tried adding gym shorts (a modern take on a fig leaf?) but it impeded the aesthetic lines of the work.
The original egg tempera painting is in a private collection.

Tree Pose (Vriksasana)
Egg Tempera on Gesso Panel - 16" x 12"
Viewers have asked, "Is she pregnant?" I love ambiguity. The background pattern is derived from a Persian theme.

Eagle Pose (Garudasana)
Egg Tempera on Gesso Panel - 9" x 6"
Although yoga originated in India, the carpet that this figure stands on is based on a Navaho rug pattern—a play on Indian (from India) and Indian (Native American). If one looks closely at the carpet a repeating eagle theme is visible.
I started this painting while visiting Taos, New Mexico. I stayed in a room in an adobe lodge where Giorgia O'Keefe purportedly once stayed and imagined that I felt her energy still present.

Triangle Pose (Trikonasana)
Egg Tempera on Gesso - 16" x 12"
I have come to see my yoga paintings as devotional art. They reflect my study with egg tempera master Koo Schadler and incorporate many of her amazing techniques. Click the Links tab to learn more about Koo Schadler.

Limb to Limb (Sarvangasana or Shoulder Stand Fantasy)
Egg Tempera on Gesso Panel - 15" x 11"
In this painting the woman's limbs are entwined with the limbs of a tree, representing the romance between humans and nature. I've included it in the Yoga Mysteries Gallery because it can be viewed as a "yoga fantasy" - an interpretation of Sarvangasana or Shoulder Stand Pose.
