Watercolor on Paper - 11" x 8 1/2"
Menstruation is essential to the female experience yet rarely depicted in visual art. Rather than hiding or catching the flow, in this painting the stream of blood is integrated into the woman’s natural surroundings.

Watercolor and Gouache on Paper - 7" x 5"
It occurred to me that although the biblical Mary was a virgin she must have menstruated like other women. This image (without the blood!) was appropriated from a fresco by Fra Angelico (or one of his assistants,) painted on the wall of a monk's cell in the Friary of San Marco in Florence, Italy. I was so entranced by the image that I sat in the monk's cell and copied the image adding my own twist to it!
The original painting has been lost.
